Name Description Used on site
ANS ANS stands for Autonomic Nervous System. It is part of the peripheral nervous system and controls vital functions such as heartbeat, breathing, and digestion. It is also involved in the acute stress response, where it works with the endocrine system to prepare the body to fight-or-flight.
Cardio Vascular response Cardiovascular response refers to the physiological changes that occur in the cardiovascular system, which comprises the heart, blood vessels, and blood, in order to distribute oxygen and nutrients to the body's tissues and remove waste products.
HR Your heart rate, or pulse, is the number of times your heart beats per minute.
HRV HRV stands for Heart Rate Variability. It is a measure of the variation in time between each heartbeat. This variation is controlled by a primitive part of the nervous system called the autonomic nervous system (ANS). It works behind the scenes, automatically regulating our heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, and digestion among other key tasks.
NIRSP Near-Infrared Spectroscopy tissue oximeter that enables non-invasive measurement of muscle oxygenation and perfusion. It measures muscle oxygenation by using near-infrared light through the skin and detecting part of the light after it has traveled into the muscle fiber and returned to the surface and back into the sensor.
RR-interval The RR interval is the time elapsed between two successive R waves of the QRS signal on the electrocardiogram. It is a function of intrinsic properties of the sinus node and autonomic influences.
Sm02 SmO2, stands for muscle oxygen saturation. It is a measure of the oxygen levels in the muscles.
SV Stroke volume (SV) is the volume of blood pumped from the left ventricle of the heart in one beat. It is calculated by subtracting the volume of blood in the ventricle at the end of a beat (end-systolic volume) from the volume of blood just prior to the beat (end-diastolic volume). Stroke volume times the heart rate equals cardiac output.
VO2 VO2 is a measurement of how well the body takes in and uses oxygen during exercise. It is expressed in milliliters of oxygen consumed per minute, adjusted for body weight in kilograms: ml/kg/min.
VO2 absolute This is the total amount of oxygen that is utilized (in VO2 ml/kg/min). This is more than the VO2 Effective due to proton leakage of the mitochondrial membrane.
